In order to meet the high dynamic demands placed on M Performance Automobiles, the 6-cylinder engine has been optimised with components from the high-performance unit presented for the BMW M3 and BMW M4 in 2014. With its forged steel crankshaft, the power unit develops its maximum torque of 465 Nm between 1,350 and 5,250 rpm. The 3.0-litre engine achieves its maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) between 5,800 and 6,000 rpm. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes the BMW X4 M40i just 4.9 seconds.

The specific exhaust system of the BMW X4 M40i can be recognised by the tailpipes in Black Chrome on both sides. Comprehensive retuning of the suspension raises the lateral and longitudinal dynamic properties of this exclusive sports activity coupé to an even higher level. Many systems have been adapted for the driving dynamics typical of M Performance. These include BMW xDrive designed with greater emphasis on the rear wheels, the electronically controlled damping system and variable sports steering.
More dynamism: the sports suspension
Driving dynamics at a supreme level is the promise from the specifically tuned sport suspension of the new BMW X4 M40i. Springs and stabilisers have been reinforced and the camber on the front axles has been enlarged. The adaptive dampers and the all-wheel drive are equipped with more dynamic parameters, so that the resulting driving sensation comes impressively close to that of a sports coupé. The neutral self-steering effect and reduced roll offer maximum driving pleasure.
More agility: the variable sport steering
For direct and agile driving style, the variable sport steering reacts to the angle of the steering wheel independently of the current speed with differing steering ratios. A large angle reduces the steering movement and improves handling in sharp bends, particularly when a sporty driving style is adopted. However, its qualities also become apparent during parking, turning and manoeuvring: for small steering angles, the system provides excellent directional stability and a very high degree of steering precision.
More traction: BMW xDrive
The BMW X4 M40i has the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive with Performance Control as standard. It regulates the variable drive distribution between the two rear wheels, thus achieving a unique level of dynamics, agility and traction. Whatever the road surface, the Sports Activity Coupé follows every change in direction precisely with noticeably fewer steering corrections. To achieve the driving dynamics typical of M Performance vehicles, the system has also been designed with the emphasis on the rear wheels.
More sport: the ultra high performance tyres
The tyres also exert a decisive influence on the sporting characteristics. On request, 20'' light-alloy M Double-spoke 680 M wheels in Bicolour look are available with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres. The ultra high performance mixed tyres (front 245/40 R20, rear 275/35 R20) offer a distinct improvement in driving dynamics.
Standard equipment includes 19'' Michelin Primacy Runflat mixed tyres. The M light-alloy Double-spoke 622 M wheels (front 245/45 R19, rear 275/40 R19) transfer the performance potential of the BMW X4 M40i to the road almost without loss.
8-SPEED STEPTRONIC SPORT TRANSMISSION.
The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel as a standard feature provides the options of more convenient or particularly sporty gear changing. The drivetrain is linked directly and, in combination with the Launch Control, also included as standard feature, permits breathtaking acceleration from a standing start. In return, larger brake discs on the front axle and optimised brake linings on all wheels ensure outstanding deceleration in the sportiest of driving situations.
